Continuous Improvement case studies
Contract Costing system
Working with IT and finance colleagues I led a team that developed and implemented a new contract costing and site management system. The system enabled enhanced management reporting for senior management, commercial, operations and finance teams.
The time saving for staff was quantified as being £40k per year.
Digital efficiency
Information from site was delayed in getting to the office as it was all paperwork. Collaborating with our resurfacing crews I lead a project to digitise all site forms and implement tablet devices, a first for the industry. The project eliminated paperwork, driving sustainability improvements and enhancing site safety. The project won the Mineral Products Association Workforce Engagement Award.
Margin enhancement
The plant account for our contracting business was continually in deficit, but by analysing data with operations teams we identified opportunities for improvement in buying or hiring plant, plant damage costs and utilisation. The improvement plan significantly enhanced performance and in the first year returned a £200k profit from the previous year’s deficits.
Process efficiency
The training team were burdened with a lot of administrative work. Working with the team we identify waste within the processes and the opportunity to automate a number of the processes.

The process efficiencies created £33k in tine savings, which meant that there was no need to recruit another person.
Process improvement
Leading a team of accountants and quantity surveyors we reviewed and redesigned month end processes, eliminating waste from the process. The redesigned process reduced the month end cycle by three days without compromising work life balance or the integrity of the results and enhanced reporting. The time saving was quantified as being £100k.
ESG Accelerator
The ESG Accelerator was a cross functional, future leader programmes in how to embed ESG principles across the business. Mentoring the participants, the projects delivered saw improvements in safety, carbon reduction, operational efficiencies and the creation of a new revenue stream.
The total value creation for the five projects was £250k.
